Hey Gunter

I apologize for taking this long to let you know how our first run with it was. We looked forward to receiving this masterpiece for months, listened to sample, read reviews, and read as much as we possibly could on it, but nothing could have prepared us for the actual sound from it. We set it up let it warm up for a bit and my partner Mark recorded a bit of an acapella "At Last". He couldn't believe the sound when he was recording it, but when we played it back over the monitors our mouths could do nothing but drop in disbelief. We listened to it a few times then sat quiet just looking at this masterpiece wondering how it could sound so great. It is by far the most amazing item I have ever heard. The sound of it completely blew both of our minds and we have been walking around with grins on ours faces ever since.
Through our great river pre it gives a very clean sound, but through our Tab V76 it is like heaven allowing for perfect translation between thought and expression. Bass comes out clean and round so it can be boosted loud, it captures voices like it went down our throat and decided what sounds good. It has a beautiful natural EQ and compression to it. I honestly cannot say enough positive words about this masterpiece, I am truly grateful to you that you construct this for us.

When we got this masterpiece I had the same feeling as Christmas except it didn't go away, the more we used the masterpiece the more intense the feeling got and it keeps getting more intense.

Thank you so much for this wonderful gift. You have given us an exceptional tool in which we will be able to give complete self expression. I cannot wait until we have a song we are happy with so I can send it to you, so you can see what we did with your baby. We are still in the process of getting to know it, believe me Gunter this masterpiece found it way to a good home.

Thank you so much again, you can always use me as a reference for your work, feel free to give out my contact information to future prospects. You were excellent with replies, extremely helpful, very polite and all while constructing a true masterpiece. I am very happy to know you.

Stay Positive

Gunter,

I own a great collection of vocal mics; vintage Neumann U87 and Neumann
U67, vintage AKG 414, SM7 and a Soundelux E251c. My Wagner U47w is the
king of the hill. It's depth of field, tone, balance and ability to handle
high SPL is otherworldly. An absolutely incredible microphone and it looks
mean as hell!

Gunter you are the finest microphone manufacturer on planet earth.

Hi Gunter,
Sorry its taken me so long to get back to you. Its taken all this time to get my jaw up off the floor.
This is, BY FAR, the finest mic I own and I have quite a few good ones. What a great build quality, but by far the most impressive aspect is once this baby is connected. I have original 47's and a few clones. After hearing what you have delivered to me, I dont think any of those should have a 47 in its name.
Hopefully, very soon I will be contacting you for an additional, and hopefully close matched unit.
Gunther, thank you once again. I can promise you without hesitation that this mic will be passed to my sons, and their sons after that.

Hi Gunter,

Dear friend

I am writing to you at 1.45 in the morning after singing with your wonderful creation.

Sir Gunter, I have tried Indian classical vocals on many microphones :
SM7, AKG 414, TLM103, U87, C-12, Blue Cactus,  and  my favourite had been a well serviced U47 chosen from a selection of U47s in a particular studio.
The 47 was able to communicate texture, tonality and breath  musically accentuated yet natural way.  I did my research and found that the vintage was too risky.
You had the best reputation for reproducing the U47, with people saying you actually made it sound better than an old vintage because you made it sound new.
Needless to say, I had extremely high expectations of your microphone, made even higher by the gentlemanly way in which you have communicated with me.  I knew that your attitude would shine through in your work.
I can only say that your microphone has gone beyond all my expectations.  The sound I hear on playback is better that what I hear when I am singing.  It is what I imagine I'm singing.  It s my dream tone and texture.  Your microphone seems to capture more than the sound.  It captures the idea.
Maybe I am producing this sound, but cant hear it while singing.  Or maybe it accentuates the musicality of dynamics in a subtle way.  You would know better than me how it works. The fact is it does it, much better than any other mic I have come across.  It  captures the idea and not just the sound.  That's how I would sum it up.
Of course they would put us both in a mental asylum if we claimed such a thing!
My next move is to upgrade to a pristine converter, as while the texture and tone of your mic are beyond words, the squashed dynamics of our focusrite sapphire is painfully obvious.  After doing this I shall send you a small sample of my vocal so you can see how the mic behaves with a dynamically demanding Indian classical voice.

Sir Gunter, the Indian Classical community bows down to you for your painstaking work and receives your gift with much affection.  It shall do great service in the decades to come.

Yours
sali

Hi Gunter,

I have just come in from the studio where a number of us put the new mics through a variety of tests and comparisons.  Without a doubt, these are the most stunning examples of that golden 47 sound I have ever witnessed.  It was truly a mind-bending experience to have a pair of microphones so seemingly similar, that not a single engineer could identify a difference between the two mics at any point in the trials.  Mind you, we are monitoring on ATC SCM150ASL monitors which are themselves revered for accuracy.  This whole experience was transcendent; as if we were transported to the Neumann test facility in 1949 for a first hand demonstration of a new U47 in all its glory.  With doubt, these have fulfilled every single requirement I conceived for a U47 and then exceeded those standards by a multitude.

Respectfully,
Kyle McCoy

Hi Gunter,

I did a comparison with a Neumann U47 recording of my voice from
28 yers ago... The older clip had been recorded through an 1176 onto Ampex
456 where it was stored for 28 years and then baked and dubbed to a hard
disk recorder. I spliced two bits together to hear the two mics back to
back. I wasn't even singing the same song or trying to match anything, but
the character of your mic is similar enough to the Neumann that I could
overdub a phrase of one of my vocal parts from 28 years ago and
most people wouldn't hear the difference! Your mic is definitely more
clear, balanced, and pleasant than that Neumann was in 1981, but you have
captured the essence of the mic well. If I really want to do that
test properly I should run it through an 1176 onto the same reel of 456
while trying to match the singing, but from that one-minute test I am
totally convinced I could do it.

I will let you know when I have had some time to try out the mic for more
than a few minutes.

Hi Gunter
just had to tell you that this U47 is letting me achieve what I've been trying to do for the past 20 years .I've never been 100% happy with anything I've done, now I'm 150% ecstatic!!! I own about 30 microphones three of which are Neumans, I also have Neve's, Siemens, Tridents, Universal Audio's, Pultecs, LA2A's, Lexicons and other sundry tasty things but this microphone is hands down the biggest leap forward in sonic magic that I have yet experienced. My wife ,who has an exceptional ear, said it's the first time she has heard a recording of herself that sounded the way she hears herself inside of her own head, we are blown away to say the least and as I said before, yes this microphone single handedly has definitely cured me of that dreaded disease ( gearlust)
Tthankyou from the the bottom of my soul to the cavities of my ear canals Gunter

Hi Gunter,

The Wagner47 is the single best purchase I ever made for the studio. I had a producer in the other day have an 'oh my god' moment when we used the Wagner U47w -> V72. He said it was the sound he had been trying to get for years but couldn't. He said it was the 'paul mccartney/cat stevens' class.

Also if you have a listen to the new Katie Noonan (from George) single - it was all tracked using your U47w into a V72

Wow!

Gunter-

I continue to be amazed and pleased with the U47w's.  I have now recorded the entire voice track for my upcoming film with them, and it sounds magnificent. I know I bought them to make it less 'dangerous' than carrying around my original U47's, but I dare say for most applications, I like yours better!

I wonder if the run has completed? If there are any additionals available, I would certainly be interested in another pair.

Gunter,

I've been working at an alarming clip, so haven't had much time to write, BUT- I find myself in the middle of a mix, and had to share my extremely positive feelings about how well vocals recorded with the U47w's sit in the mix.  It is an extremely natural sound, with an amazing ability to reflect even the most difficult voice with a power that I had only gotten before with exceptional vintage gear.

I have the privilege of owning 6 original U-47s of various configurations, and they vary tremendously in character from one to the next.  What I appreciate most about the Wagner is the consistency between the two that I purchased. No, that's not true.  What I appreciate most is the character possible from these instruments.  It is as if the best of my U47's got together and had offspring that reflected the 'good stuff' from each. What also surprises me is that they are equally at home in voice over and music sessions.  If you haven't tried them on upright bass, prepare for a treat....

Thank you for a most stylish and elegant tool that I now find myself reaching for on every session.  It was well worth the wait. Should you choose to do more, or find parts to do any other work in this arena, count my order in!

Best regards-

Hi Gunter,

Since we last communicated, I have finished several albums, and had more time to evaluate the U47W.

In short, I love it.
The sound is very natural, present, and balanced.
Mostly I use it for the primary vocal.
When people sing into it, the sound in the headphones, compared to other mikes, helps to bring a good performance from them.

Recently I was recording a piano trio, (piano, violin, and cello). The violin sounded better through the mic than it did in the room, where it was a little thin and irritating. The recording sounded great however.
When I bought the mic, it was a leap into the unknown, relying on others comments and reviews. It was also a demanding investment.

Now however, I would not want to be without it.
So thanks for your efforts, and all the best.

Bye,

aomahana.

Fuckin Fantastic!!! That’s all we can say. Scott and I are both absolutely thrilled. Both of these mics sound totally amazing. Warm and beautiful as can be. We did a session where we had the C-24 on acoustic and the U47 on male vocals. It was a folksy ballad type of song – with some analog synth pads and heavy electric guitars in parts.
You guys outdid yourselves. Gunter, we let your mic warm up for a few hours and then did the track. It was so clear and warm. The detail is incredible. Scott said it might even sound better than an original U47, since all the originals are so old. Honestly, we were both blown away.

Doug, you did a phenomenal job bringing that C24 back up to snuff. No words to describe. It was beautiful sounding. The detail and the warmth in the acoustic were outstanding. We recorded it in stereo and the matching was exceptional.

Cheers to both of you. (Don’t tell anyone, but scott had tears in his eyes after the first take). J

Gunter,

If I had wanted a new, modern, physical '47 look-alike I could have had one.  Fortunately (wisely), what I wanted was - most importantly - what you make: a mic that also sounds like a U-47.  Your adherence to all the original compromises, limitations, other characteristics, creates the "magic" that we crave.

Thank you again for a beautiful mic.

Hi Gunter,

Thought I'd give you some feedback for the mic I just bought from you.

Used in a session the other day, the chain was U47w -> Sytek -> 1176 ->
Ampex MM1200 2" 16 track. Band was kinda like Coldplay, rock but not too hard.

Never have I had the vocal sit so well in a mix, it seems to sit in just the right
place without being too loud, too peaky or too forward. In a word, using the
U47w just makes the vocal easy to mix! Also, it looks so good that every singer I
have coming in to the studio wants to use it.

I've also used it to record a cello in a quartet and to record a Sitar.
It has made a huge difference to the quality of the recordings I can make. Thanks again!

Hope you're well and keep up the good work.

hallo gunter

Hallo Gunter,

was soll ich sagen...

Daniel

Hi Gunter...forgive repetition - most of this was written before I spoke to you on the phone !

I'm currently doing an album with a girl called Beccy Owen, she's rock but with quite a leaning towards jazz... www.beccyowen.com will have some samples of her earlier stuff which I wasn't involved in...

Anyway, we did some vocal takes yesterday with the mic....gorgeous !!!

Now you may or may not find this strange...normally my default vocal mic has been my u87, which is what I've used for all Kathryn Williams' vocals...but for some reason that mic wasn't working with Beccy, so we'd been using an AKG C414 for her guide vocals, compressed by one channel of my Urei 1178...funnily enough we both liked the sound much better than the u87...
However, your u47 is just the ticket !  I got one take without compression, but found that with very gentle compression (again from the Urei) it was perfect...

Now these things become difficult to describe....it was like the u87 has a very detailed sound, but somehow detailed in all the wrong places, while the u47 puts all the detail in the right places.  Further there's a beautiful sense of space around the voice, almost as if it were a stereo mic...(does that make any sense at all ???) even though it's a mono source.  It's giving a warm but open sound, a definite sense of the room we're recording in, while the u87 by comparison seems to sound somehow 'closed in' as if in a much more confined space.

And absolutely no need for any EQ in the recording path.  Loads of brightness and presence, yet still warmth and intimacy.  I feel that in some of the more modern mics I've tried these things are mutually exclusive, like warmth and intimacy cause presence to be sacrificed....definitely not so here - it's like cake and eat it.

Obviously I'll get to know the mic more as I use it, and these are just first impressions, but so far I'm absolutely delighted.

 'll keep you posted.

 Cheers

Dave

Gunter,
I had the chance to use the mic on some projects now.
I have to say it is worth every penny. The sound is
spectacular...clean, detailed and with a sonic quality not quite like other
new mics. I have paired it with my V76s mic pre and they work beautifully
together. Male vocals in particular are right on the money. Thanks for taking
the time to get the details right.
All the best in the new year.

Dear Gunter,
It went great. I'm sorry I didn't sing its praises sooner but I have
been in the studio the past 5 days. The engineer Im working with  who really
knows mikes thinks its marvellous. The studio that he used to work at had 7
U47s!
We compared  your mike to all the other mikes we had vocal tests with.
Over all the mike sounds rich present and gorgeous. Tim my engineer thought your mike
sounded the best of all the mikes. Everyone at the studio was also very
excited by the case.
Most importantly, I cant thank you enough for your kindness in helping me
get one of your beautiful mikes.  Knowing I have this beautiful instrument
in my  possession makes me feel much more confident about my project and my
singing.
I will send you a copy of my album when its done. I think you will be
impressed.
    Most Gratefully,
     Erica

Hi Gunter,

The mic is great, everything I’ve put through it sounds fantastic. I achieved the best cello sound I’ve ever captured at a session a few weeks ago, the sound was so full and all the vocalists that have used it have commented on how great it sounds. I am very happy with it, thanks.

 Thanks

Wagner U47w - WOW!!

Gunter,

HOLY COW!

What a beautiful, stunning sounding microphone. I plugged into my vintage Neve 1073, and from the first notes, the sound was unreal. No EQ needed, the mic was lush, warm and a perfect fit for my voice. I just sang and it fit the track perfectly. Plus it's dead quiet, what an absolutely amazing thing.

Gunter, I am truly honored and humbled to have such an exceptional mic as the jewel of my collection. I can't thank you enough for the care and craftsmanship that went into this microphone.  As I mentioned in my last e-mail, I ordered a TAB Funkenwerk V72 from Oliver, and can't wait to hear that combination for myself. It should be ready in the next few weeks.

What are the chances that you'll have enough parts to make another complete U47w for me?  This may be completely impossible, but you never know if you don't ask...  At least this time I can make all the decisions in advance: short body, satin top, K47 capsule, vintage PSU.

With my deepest appreciation and respect for your artistry and talent.

Best wishes,

Kevin Waehner

Gunter,
I just wanted to drop you a note regarding the Wagner U47 microphone I purchased some time ago.  I've used it in my home studio with wonderful results but didn't fully appreciate it until I went to a local professional studio recently.  I was eager to see how your mic performed when compared to the studios best vocal microphones.  I've worked at this particular studio before with great results and it's known for it's collection of vintage mics.  The studio technician was also the studio owner with many recording credits, and has owned this particular studio since approx. 1985.  The microphones included in the shoot out were a Neumann U67, a Neumann U249, a C24, a C12VR, and your Wagner U47 (his Neumann U47's power supply was broken).  The Neumann's and C24 were all vintage of course and all mics were in great shape and well cared for.  After recording a short vocal performance with each, the technician and I listened to the play back.  I specifically told the tech not to let me know which mics we were listening to so I could make an unbiased opinion.  All the mics sounded great but I chose two mics that allowed the vocals to sit above the instrumentals the best.  Unknown to me, these mics were the U249 and
W U47.  We recorded another pass of vocals with only these two mics and listened back.  In a blind test, I chose my own W U47 as the best sounding mic of those assembled.  Imagine my delight.  The U249 had just a little too much boomy-ness to it and thus seemed to muddy the vocal signal up.  The W U47 seemed to be slightly more clear.

I must confess that proximity had a lot to do with this test.  At first I was 6" or so off the microphones and the
W U47 sounded good but not great.  It was not until I found the sweet spot only a few inches away from the diaphragm that the W U47 shined.

In conclusion, I am very pleased with my purchase of your U47 microphone.  Please feel free to continue to include me as a reference for anyone considering a similar purchase.  The studio owner even said that if he had the money, he would purchase one himself!  I will be giving him your information in the next week or so.

Thanks again for the microphone and I sincerely hope you are doing well.

Hello Gunter,

Yes, the Mic arrived in excellent condition, but I’m a little disappointed after listening. The U47w is the only smooth, warm, larger than life sounding Mic in the studio now (smile)!!
Great job, this Mic sounds absolutely stunning! I hope for my sake there aren’t too many left because this is truly a treasure. Just once, I would love to be self-centered.

Thanks for everything.

hatte Dein Mikrofon einzuweihen.

Hello Gunter
The Wagner U47w arrived perfectly and I have used on several
sessions and they sound great. They have that "produced and mixed" sound you
want from a 47. So I'm happy, thanks

The Microphone

Hi Gunter,

Well, I'm a week into the album at Metropolis Studios and so far I've used the microphone on:

  • drums - as a room mike
  • acoustic guitar
  • electric guitar
  • vocals

The general response is WOW!  It's got a very clear midrange on everything, especially partnered through my Neves.  I achieved the most AMAZING vocal sound I've ever pulled with this microphone - it really pops through the mix.  It really is an incredible microphone, so THANK YOU Gunter - you've made my job a hell of a lot easier!  I can really tell the difference between my pre-amps now (the ones on the M.Box suck - surprise) and enabled me to get some really top sounds on my first truly enjoyable album recording...

The microphone doesn't just sound amazing, it sure looks the part too.  Anyone who sings into it comments on the stunning good looks (of their engineer...ooh, no, sorry, the microphone) and the build quality is unsurprisingly everything that I'd expected - extremely high.  I haven't taken a look inside yet, and I doubt I will - I'll leave that for the techs.

Oh and I'm not sure I will be hiring it out...  The other members of the UK Wagner-U47-club were right to keep theirs close by at all times.

Cheers Gunter, Will :O)
